The Herriman High volleyball team started their 2021 campaign off with a 3-0 victory over West last week. It was a promising start for what head coach Austin Linford said is a “super young team.”

“We lost one of our two best players from last year, who moved back to California. And then we lost all of our seniors,” Linford said. “We have a couple seniors and juniors, and then a bunch of young players.”

But having a young team is no problem for Linford, who said one of his favorite things about coaching is player development.

One of the team’s young players is sophomore setter Hailey Duncan, who joins the team after moving from California.

“She’s fantastic. She runs a 5-1, which means she plays all the way around so we only have one setter. She does everything you can ask for,” Linford said.

Many of the passes Duncan will make over the course of the season will be going to Nana Asiata, a junior outside hitter who made the All-Region team last year as a sophomore.

“She was our best player last year,” Linford said. “She’s kind of quiet, but at the same time she leads with what she does. She doesn’t make errors.”

Another team leader for the season will be the libero, senior Ashlyn Bailey, who Linford said has improved a lot since last year.

“In order to get better at volleyball, you really need to play club. And Ashlyn didn’t play club for years. And this last year she decided to play club, and you can tell. She’s fantastic. She’s a really good libero and she has aspirations to play in college next year.”

The team’s youth was on display in their opening set against West, as they racked up 20 errors, which allowed West to take a 24-21 lead. Linford called a timeout and emphasized to his team that they had to go error free if they were to win the set. And that’s exactly what they did as they scored five consecutive points to win 26-24.

Continuing to play error-free is a key goal for the young Herriman team as they enter region play. Their first region match will be on Tuesday, Sep. 14 when they take on Copper Hills.
